Working on a new song
by Johan on Mar.18, 2010, under Blog
I wrote a new song about 2 weeks ago and I’ve been playing around with it a bit. Started to make a recording and just added instruments and vocals as I heard it. I think it’s close to finished, but it wil take a couple of listens to determine that for sure. Anyway, here it is and it’s called “You’re near”:

Damn mathematicians and rounding results to suite their needs!

Random thought for the day : In March 1856 Mount Everest, or Peak XV as it was known back then was announced to be 29,002ft high. While the actual mathematical finding was that it was only 29,000ft exactly! Why? Here’s why:
The arbitrary addition of 2 ft (61 cm) was to avoid the impression that an exact height of 29,000 feet (8,839.2 m) was nothing more than a rounded estimate.

Firefox vs Internet explorer
by Johan on Feb.10, 2010, under Blog
I know this topic has come up many times and so many people have had so many opinions, but I just needed to have my say.
One of my friends recently asked me why she would want to use firefox over internet explorer, “it’s all the same to me”, she said. So I decided to lay some proof out on the table. I feel strongly about this because I’ve been doing web design for a while now and the pain that comes with developing something to work on IE is unbearable!
First up I’ll share my personal experiences with you and then we’ll see some pro’s and con’s relating to firefox. As I mentioned, when you develop a website using current Web 2.0 standards with css you will always find that something is not displayed correctly on IE. I don’t care who you are, it always happens : I’ve just finished my design and it looks great in firefox, but then the dreaded moment comes and I realize I have to see how it looks in IE!! All of a sudden nothing is aligned and your transparent effects are gone! Yay IE! So then you hack the crap out of it to make it work on both browsers… Always fun! (continue reading…)
Blog and music site finalized.
by Johan on Feb.09, 2010, under Blog
Hello all!
The new website layout is now complete. As I stated before I’ve divided the website into two categories. Category one is a music portal where you will find all of the music I wish to share with the world.
I have designed it so that everyone will have access to all the different kinds of recordings I make. There will be three types of recordings you can listen to. Studio recordings, living room recordings and music in creation. Studio recordings will be those recordings that I have recorded in a professional studio with proper equipment and knowledge. Living room recordings are the recordings that you all know by now. These are recordings I make on my own in my spare time in, you guessed it, my living room!
Then there will be a new addition called music in creation. In this section I will host “scratch pad” recordings. These recordings are not by any stretch of the imagination good recordings, but they serve a purpose. They help me keep track of those songs that I feel need to be recorded, either in living room mode or preferrably studio mode. You can visit the music portal here.
Ok, so from now on when you visit JohanGriesel.co.za you will find a homepage that gives you a choice. You can either go to the music portal or you can visit my blog. The blog is where I will be telling you a bit more about some of the recordings, the reasons for some of the lyrics etc. I will also use the blog to just write basically anything I find interesting.

It’s here!
by Johan on Feb.08, 2010, under Blog
Hello all!
My blog is finally an entity on its own! YEAH! I have decided to divide the website into two parts, one that will cater to the musician in me and another that will host all of what I get up to and other interesting stuffs.
I will also use the blog to tell you guys about new songs that are available on the music section of the website. I am really excited about this change!! The music section can be seen as sort of a music portal where you will be able to access all of my music that I will lay out in their different categories. You can also leave your comments on the music right there. Music will be downloadable or, if you like you will be able to listen to it straight from the website.
I’m doing things this way to make it easier for people to access my music. Now you don’t have to search through a bunch of blog entries to find that song that I recorded way back in 2004, all will be conveniently laid out for you to find!
Ok, chat to you soon! Bye 4 now!
J
